Jan Birtle
Jan is a Consultant Medical Psychotherapist and Psychiatrist and served on NHS Boards Leading on service transformation as Associate Medical Director and Training Programme Director. She has a reputation for innovation and established the National Specialist Service for people with Personality Disorder, instilling hope through reframing this as Personality Development Difficulties, and a coaching and mentoring programme as Specialist Advisor for the Royal College of Psychiatrists. She continues clinical work through DocHealth, a confidential service for doctors where she now leads the. service as Clinical Director.
She is a qualified professional coach, certified as an Advanced Practitioner by Global Leadership Associates specialising in Regenerative Leadership and Vertical Development across systems. She is a member of the Faculty of Medical Coaches where she contributes to quality improvement alongside training and coaching.
Jan has a passion for working with people of all backgrounds to facilitate personal learning and growth drawing on her unique combination of clinical expertise, coaching and organisational development inputs. She has worked with successful executives through to highly traumatised people who have found fulfilling ways forward.
She is keen to ensure individuals, groups and community systems recognise the power of connections to enable ways forward from conflictual tensions. She encourages individuals and groups to look beneath the surface of their experiences allowing time and space for creativity to emerge. Building communities involves listening to people who don’t ‘fit in’ and taking seriously the voices of those excluded from mainstream society, many of whom have backgrounds of trauma, dislocation and disruption. Valuing these perspectives strengthens our communities, the whole system being greater than the sum of its parts.
Jan was Vice-Chair and Safeguarding Lead of UnseenUK, a charity combatting Modern Slavery, contributing to the transition from start up to established organisation. She continues as an Advisor to Streettalk, a charity providing psychotherapy to street prostitutes and has previously been a Trustee to Dudley Mind. Her current interests include the regeneration of the ‘Theatre of Small Convenience’, working with 2 creatives this former Victorian toilet noted in the Guinness Book of Records as the smallest theatre in the World.
Jan completed a symbolic swim crossing the Hellespont from Europe to Asia. She connects with nature, our most complex system, through gardening and hiking and loves music, being a (very) aspirant pianist.
